Exploring Jacksonville’s Rich Culture Through Storymaps with MOSH and Florida Humanities

I’m super excited to share my latest project with you! I recently had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) in Jacksonville and Florida Humanities to create five unique storymaps, each highlighting a distinct culture and its history, identity, and contributions within Jacksonville, Florida. This has been a deeply meaningful experience, and I’m honored to have played a role in preserving and sharing these powerful stories.

About the Project

The project focused on the following five cultures: African American, Native American, Filipino, Islamic, and Hispanic. Each storymap provides an immersive, educational journey through the cultural history of Jacksonville, offering a closer look at how these communities have shaped the city’s identity over the years.

  • African American Culture: This storymap dives into the resilience, achievements, and vibrant cultural legacy of the African American community in Jacksonville, including historic neighborhoods, key figures, and social movements that have contributed to the city’s rich history.

  • Native American Culture: Exploring the heritage and presence of Native Americans in Jacksonville, this storymap highlights both historic significance and modern identity, emphasizing the connection to the land, traditions, and efforts to preserve their culture.

  • Filipino Culture: The Filipino storymap celebrates the contributions of the Filipino community, from early immigration to cultural events, showcasing the warmth, cuisine, and traditions that make Jacksonville a more diverse place.

  • Islamic Culture: This map traces the historical development and current influence of the Islamic community in Jacksonville, focusing on religious landmarks, cultural events, and the shared values of peace, education, and charity.

  • Hispanic Culture: With a focus on Hispanic heritage, this storymap explores the diverse countries of origin represented in Jacksonville’s Hispanic community and how language, cuisine, music, and dance play a vital role in the city’s identity.

Why This Project Matters to Me

Creating these storymaps has been more than just a job; it has been an honor and a passion project for me. It’s inspiring to see the mosaic of cultures that make up Jacksonville and to have a hand in telling these stories. I truly believe that learning about each other’s histories is the first step toward fostering understanding, connection, and unity within our community.

Working alongside the MOSH and Florida Humanities teams has been a rewarding experience. Their dedication to cultural preservation and education aligns perfectly with my own mission to highlight and uplift diverse voices and histories.

I Want to Hear From You!

I would love for you to explore these storymaps and share your thoughts. What resonates most with you? Did you learn something new about Jacksonville’s cultural landscape? Your feedback means a lot to me, and I look forward to hearing what you think.
